personal work: Other People's Dirty Laundry

"Changing sheets and doing laundry are the chores of my work and I think it's interesting that I am often dealing with other people's 'dirty laundry' - repressed emotions, fantasies, fears, activities which seem unconscionable...it's sad that sex is so complicated for us humans."

Jenna, Manhattan 2007

In the spring of 2007 I met and began photographing Jenna (known professionally as Jennadea), an upper-middle class woman in her late thirties who had made her living for the past ten years working in the sex industry. When I met her, Jenna was living in a co-op apartment in the West Village in downtown Manhattan. She was working almost every day, seeing clients in the apartment where she lived.

In early 2008 Jenna moved to San Diego where she continued to support herself doing sex work. She is now dividing her time between Austin, Texas and New York City, supplementing her local income by taking periodic work trips to various cities around the country, where she stays in high-end hotel suites and sees local clients, most of whom she solicits by advertising on a website which features escorts and erotic massage practitioners.

"I stole this 'do not disturb' sign from the historic US Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. It was a work trip-probably around 2005. It's a lovely, huge, grand old hotel with lots of dark wood built in 1910. That was before I imagined moving to New York on a whim later that year and before I knew I would wind up moving out to San Diego after a few exciting but soul grinding years in NYC."Manhattan 2007.

"Smoking out my window on a freezing February day in Manhattan, I so want to quit!"Manhattan 2010.

"My comfy air mattress has a layer of memory foam...I decided to stop buying beds because I just move around too much! I work and sleep on the same bed which freaks some people out but I just put a layer of sheets and towels on top and I don't think it's a big deal at all. I love my peaceful, all white bedroom in NYC even though it's really loud outside."Manhattan 2009.

"Unpacking at the hotel in Miami-I couldn't wait to take off my clothes and walk around naked! I hate winter almost more than anything."Miami Beach 2007.

"Getting ready for an appointment...I always put on lipstick and eyeliner, although not much. I'm not very good with make-up. My mom was always begging me to wear make-up and skirts in high school but I was more like Leather Tuscadero in Fonzie with the bi-level shag haircut and tomboy attitude. Now I literally live in cotton pajama bottoms and T-shirts. My day is all about undressing anyway. When I see women all dressed up for work it just looks so uncomfortable to me."Miami Beach 2007.

"Slipping into the strappy heel.s..I only wear them 'in the bedroom' as they say. I can't walk in heels very well at all and when I was a stripper, I usually just crawled around on the stage a lot! But it is fun to strut around like a lady a bit before my sessions because I hardly ever do that in my personal life."Washington DC 2008.

"This is with M. in New York at my little place on Charles Street. He was one of my all time, very best clients and is now becoming a dear friend and maybe more. He was always on time, never cancelled, was always generous and is great looking and kind. We haven't done any sessions since I moved out to San Diego but we talk on the phone a lot and he came out to visit and took me out on a fun date. Then we met in D.C. and went on another date. Kinda funny since I've done so much more than 'seen him naked' but it feels so sweet and genuine. We are truly getting to know each other in a whole different universe."Manhattan 2007.

"I love this photo...making the bed after a session. It was a bit scary to paint the walls that dark cherry red because the room was so tiny but it really worked. I loved that room. It was cozy and warm and cheerfully sensual. Changing sheets and doing laundry are the chores of my work and I think it’s interesting that I am often dealing with other people's 'dirty laundry' - repressed emotions, fantasies, fears, activities which seem unconscionable...It’s sad that sex is so complicated for us humans."Manhattan 2007.

"These are the tools of my trade and I am proud of how simple and how little I waste in doing my work. Just a glove and a condom! So many industries are so wasteful and damaging to our world. Many people think that my work damages people and relationships but I think it mainly holds families together, for better or for worse. A relationship is already damaged by the time someone cheats. Many of my clients are so thankful to have their time with me and they are trying very hard NOT to abandon their families. Most of my clients have fantasies that they feel shy about since our concepts of masculine sexuality remain brutally stiff. Many of them are single and really very nice people of all ages and walks of life."Washington DC 2008.

"Keeping the notes and numbers and names and appointments organized is a harder task than people understand...the phone just rings and rings and you never know if someone is actually going to show up or if they are just calling to play phone sex games. Screening new clients and appointment setting can be an overwhelming headache and would be Lesson One of Sex Work 101."Washington DC 2008.

"Sometimes I will spread out the cash from a few days and just look at it and touch it. Cash is an interesting physical link to our financial system that is now so symbolic. I like working with cash because it is a much more direct tie to the physicality of labor and trade. When I lived in Vegas, I had to take credit cards because most of the clients there use ‘business expense accounts’."Washington DC 2008.

"My friend Jess, who also turned forty this year, found this 'cougar soap' in some shop and gifted it to me. Its funny! The whole cougar thing is, well, Ummmm ~ thanks a lot Demi!!"Manhattan 2010.

"Getting the bed ready in Miami for a morning appointment, which I love, it's nice start the day fresh and awake with some cash! I've always been an insane morning person and I really appreciate those ER doctors and pilots who get off the night shift at 7am and need some TLC."Miami Beach 2007.

"I think the ten minute foot rub I give is a major key to my success…If I were to teach Sex Work 101, this would be Lesson Two and I wish I had learned it years earlier in my career."Washington DC 2008.

"I love pictures of the money...someday this will all seem like a strange dream but I'll have the pictures to prove it!"Miami Beach 2007.

"I remember what a sweetheart this man was. It's so unfortunate that the dynamics of power and gender would lead most people to assume something very different than what the energy actually was at that moment. It's just a picture of a very happy, sexually satisfied man buckling up his pants! Oh, and a girl who just worked him over good for a nice bit of cash."Washington DC 2008.

"Interesting how so many big, strong, strapping men just love to be bent over and done in the butt! Just a simple fact of life and I have no negative judgment about it whatsoever."Washington DC 2008.

"I always keep my toys very clean. I use high quality silicone toys that do not absorb germs easily. I put condoms on them and then wash them in hot, soapy water. I even boil them regularly. It is not uncommon to see a large steaming pot of boiling sex toy in my kitchen!"Washington DC 2008.

"I love to read and the quiet pleasure of being able to curl up with a good book between clients or soak in the tub is one of the reasons that I value my job so much."Miami Beach 2007.

"The beautiful view from the rooftop of my East Village place. I can't wait till it warms up so I can do a naked shoot up there!"Manhattan 2010.

"Looking through the escort ads online...years ago I was more active politically and joined as many sex work organizations as possible and hung out with a lot of other sex workers. I even managed a small group in Seattle for a few years that required a lot of organization and cleaning and hours of phone time. We had a lot of fun but now I stay very solo and private so it's always interesting to see what's going on with other gals in the biz."Washington DC 2008.

"Another picture from my blog... This was from my Seattle archives, around the year 2000, a client brought in this mammoth dildo and I actually used it on him! It had its own case and it was as big as my whole arm! A very long, patient, slow & easy process that I have chosen not to specialize in. I like to relax and do massage and play with a bit less intensity!"Manhattan 2010.

"Dealing with neighbors has been my worst nightmare. I have been blackmailed for free sex, (which I did not fall for), and given all kinds of negative energy, just because a few guys come over in the afternoon and quietly leave after about an hour. This was my neighbor downstairs in NYC. She was a pastor, unfortunately for me, and always asked a million, nosy questions. I was so happy to move out of there!"Manhattan 2008.

"I always wear a lacy thong panty during my sessions but slip out of a simple dress of some sort. Some gals love to dress up in beautiful, matching lingerie but I have gotten pretty lazy about dressing. My session is really focused on body work, touch and bringing my clients into their own physicality and sensation more than encouraging them to stare at me anyway."Manhattan 2007.

"I look so haggard in this photo. During my few years in NYC I lost four of my closest family members, including my Mom, to terminal illness, which was devastating to me. The sadness shows on my face and I am happy that I am looking much less stressed these days."Manhattan 2008.
